Order an Inspection

Know the car you’re buying.

Having a pre-purchase car inspection and a complete interior and exterior condition review of the car is more important today than ever before.

There’s a lot involved in a complete vehicle inspection when you order a Level I or a Level II vehicle inspection with West Coast Car Inspections.  You might expect the car inspection will take a little longer than your average repair shop car inspection. Our Master Mechanic or ASE-certified technicians perform these inspections multi times every day and they know just what to look for.

A well performed pre-purchase inspection report will allow both the buyer and seller to feel good about the overall transaction.  A car inspection report that demonstrates some flaws should be used to negotiate a discount with the retail price or many times the seller can repair the car before the sale is completed. A vehicle inspection report where there are many issues, might make you reconsider the purchase. One or the other at a minimum,  you will know what problems you are purchasing and you will ultimately know the car your buying.

Both Level I and Level II Pre-Purchase car inspection will include a road test and computerized engine analysis with our Autel MaxiSys Scan device to verify that it is not producing any engine computer codes.  We will put the car through a rigorous performance review.  A few of the questions that we want to know:  Do all the gauges operate properly including,  speedometer, fuel gage, temperature gage, warning lamp, and oil pressure.  When we inspect the Brake system we will inspect the brakes grabbing or any vibration at high velocity.  We will observe if the rotors are worn, or warped.  Our inspectors will listen to engine or acceleration noise. Does the car start with ease,  The vehicles steering will be evaluated for drifting, pulling, or any squeaking noises and we are looking for transaxle noise along with drive axle or CV noise.   The car inspector will evaluate the transmission for shift quality, smoothness vs slipping in and out of gear.

Both Level I and Level II will have the Exterior and Interior of the car reviewed.

During the Exterior car inspection we will inspect the body for general condition of the car including gap panel concerns, scratches, dents  and dings.  We will note if there is body damage or indications of rust as well as paint oxidation.  We will Inspect and note any cracks or chips in any windshield including rear window, side windows, side mirrors and rear view mirrors.  A common wear item will be the front window cowel which is a thin rubber seal that can easily wear in the sun.   We will inspect the wiper motor assembly  and that the blades are in good condition for the front window and the rear window.   A good set of Tires contribute to safety and fuel economy for your vehicle.    Items we will note in our condition report, are all the wheels the same size, same type, brand and age.  We will measure for tire tread and look for curb damage on the tires and wheels.  When we look under the hood we look for any unusually parts missing, clamps and hose’s that show wear and tear.  We observe any oil leaks, exhaust leaks and exhaust smoke.  Additional items are checked for operation of the doors, door handles and trunk operation.

During our Interior car inspection we will note any smoke odors or mildew, we will review the sound system and test all functions of the radio, speakers and Bluetooth operation or CD player. We note on the inspections what the condition of the upholstery and flooring and we inspect the trunk carpeting and we verify that the tools and spare tire with jack are present. Lights, electric controls are verified and the headlights, tail lights, high beams, parking lights, brake lights, turn signals are all operating properly.  Our vehicle inspectors assess the operation of the heater & the air condition system, electric door locks, electric seats and controls as well as the electric windows.  All vehicle make and models can be very different so we make sure to review additional interior items like the glove box, power port, hood release, USB port, door panels, headrests and vanity mirrors.  We will verify the car is equipped with keyless entry system and does it function properly,  as well as the horn & gas cap.

In addition to the maintenance items that we inspect during our a Level I or a Level II vehicle inspection, we will perform a visual inspection of the following General Maintenance components:  Timing Belt, Belt Tensioner, Valve Cover Gasket,  Windshield Washer Fluid Top-Off, Start/Charge Test, Spark Plug and coils for Scheduled Maintenance, Fuel Filter, Fuel System, Ignition Wires, Power Steering Hoses, Exhaust System Check and Cabin filter.

During a Level I or a Level II we will inspect the Tires, we examine tire pressure and check the sensors for tire pressure, making sure the tire pressure is set according to the specifications set by your vehicle’s manufacturer. We perform a visual inspection of your tires and the current depth of the tread and the tire wear patterns.  If we see uneven tire wear in our Level II inspection than we perform a alignment check on our Hunter Pro system.  A tire  wear could be a sign of a misalignment which could reduce the life of your tires and decrease fuel efficiency.  We make sure the tread depth of the tires has not fallen below the recommended levels.  We make sure your tires are set to provide the best performance when you are on the road.

One of your vehicle’s most important safety features, your Brakes! During a Level I and Level II Inspection, we’ll examine the condition of your braking system and watch for any problems like grinding, squeaking, Steering shaking while braking, and spongy brakes as well.  We measure Brake Pad/Shoe Thickness, Measure Brake Drum Diameter, Measure Brake Rotor Thickness, Parking Brake System, Brake Hoses and other Braking Components including Hardware, Wheel Cylinders, Calipers, and ABS, Brake Fluid.

West Coast Car Inspections will complete a Level II car inspection where the car is required to be in the shop and up on a lift.  Obviously, there are many limitations to Pre-Purchase car inspection if the car is not up on a lift.  We take a very deep dive when we start looking under the car.  We check the Chassis, Suspension and Steering including loose steering parts, damaged shocks or struts, broken or worn out mounts or bushings, and vehicle swaying or bouncing. We also inspect Drive Shaft, Idler Pitman Arm, U-Joint, Center Link, Tie rod Ends, Bushings, Ball Joints, Shocks/Struts. If we find any issue to be related to an alignment, then we will do an Alignment check.

When our inspector has completed the inspection than he/she will attach all photos and videos to the report and send his findings back to our quality control desk for a 2nd set of eyes.  When we believe the report is at our highest standard of quality we will then release it and send the full report to the person that ordered and paid for the pre-purchase inspection.  We also, will attach a Car-Fax report and any background information that we find on the car.
